Mid-year Fiesta and Multiple Intelligences

As usual, the mid-year Fiesta is a time to show the talents of our students.

This year there is no exception. The Student Associations and all the supporting organizations and students did a good job with a warm atmosphere. Nevertheless, there are a couple of differences.

The China national flag was raised for the first time in Wah Yan along with the China national anthem. The Wah Yan College HK flag then followed with the Wah Yan College song. This reminds us that we must have not narrow our view in HK but should open ourselves to China.

Secondly, for the first time in Wah Yan history, there is a Chinese Jesuit as our Supervisor.....Rev. Stephen Chow, also an old boy of Wah Yan HK, became our College Supervisor on 1 Jan 2007. He was present today delivering a welcome speech to all the teachers, parents and students. His talk is on Howard Gardner's theory on Multiple Intelligences.

These eight categories of Intelligences are:
  • Linguistic
  • Logical-mathematical
  • Spatial
  • Bodily-kinesthetic
  • Musical
  • Naturalistic
  • Interpersonal
  • Intrapersonal
He draw the example of organizing this Fiesta event a manifest of the students' interpersonal intelligence. Indeed communications & talking is a strong skill of Wahyanites. Moreover through these activities, we learnt how to be responsible citizens.

At the end, Fr. Chow reminded the parents and teachers that the report cards (exam results) to be given to parents tomorrow only focus on the first two intelligences (Linguistic and Logical-Mathematical). Parents should seek to develop the child's other intelligences as well in order to build confidence of our students.

God bless
Simon

p.s. I try to map these eight intelligences with our Wah Yan's mission and found our mission is much wider.

So Wah Yan has a challenging mission to develop our students, particular in the moral & Spiritual aspect.
